Frequently Asked Questions

When do you rehearse? How often are concerts/performances?

The Youth Chorus of Kansas City is committed to providing quality music education and high-level performance experience for singers throughout the Kansas City area. The 2020-2021 rehearsal schedule may be adjusted to protect singers and staff in response to COVID-19. The final weekly schedule, group protocols and performance information will be finalized and distributed in August, prior to the beginning of the season.

Rehearsals occur weekly on Monday evenings beginning in September and ending in May. The times below include music literacy class, group voice lessons, and ensemble rehearsal.

Further performance dates and locations will be determined later in the Fall once more information is available regarding responsible and safe conditions for group gatherings.

Where do you usually rehearse? Where do you perform?

Monday night rehearsals are held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City, MO (Westport). Performance locations vary throughout the metro area.

Is any special uniform/outfit/clothing needed for performances?

Students perform in a YCKC shirt provided by the Youth Chorus of Kansas City, and are asked to provide black slacks and shoes.

What is the cost for participation? Are there extra costs beyond tuition?

Tuition is $50 per month for the 9 month season and a $10 registration fee, tuition can be paid up front or by semester. Other payment plans are available upon request. There are occasional extra costs, such as tickets to sporting events where the Youth Chorus is singing the National Anthem. Regular season tuition covers the cost of sheet music, performance shirt, and participation.

Do you offer financial assistance? How do I apply?

Yes, the Youth Chorus of Kansas City provides partial scholarship assistance based upon financial need. YCKC does not offer merit-based scholarships. To apply for a scholarship, please indicate interest during the audition sign-up process.

It looks like you have already had auditions. Can my child still join the group?

Yes, we schedule auditions at various times throughout the year. Please contact us to inquire. Some ensembles can accept new singers on an ongoing basis, more advanced ensembles typically only accept singers at the beginning of each semester.

What musical experience should my child have to participate?

Students in younger grades only need to demonstrate an ability to match pitch and a willingness to learn and work together in a group environment. Students auditioning for more advanced choirs should have a basic understanding of music literacy and/or some choral singing experience.

How is communication handled?

Communication is primarily handled through email and the remind.com text messaging system. We also use Chorus Connection as a tool to communicate with and provide information to parents and singers.  Each ensemble has an Ensemble Coordinator who is the primary point of contact regarding absence/illness/etc.
